The Best Composite Decking For The Block Challenge House
25th Jul 2024The Best Composite Decking For The Block Challenge House
Being on The Block is no easy feat, with the pressure of delivering a room or two each week and then throw in a couple of challenges along the way it is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
However, this year The Block contestants received a handwritten, heartfelt letter from Kay about her special needs Son and friend who have a house they share that was in much need of a renovation and upgrade to help maintain their happy home for years to come.
Of course, with a request like that “it definitely puts everything into perspective” Rachel from House 2 said. So all five teams were more than happy to take a break from their own hectic renovations to help improve the home of Tim & Tyler, two special needs boys that love living together in their local town of Gisborne. The teams were divided into two with Jenny & Dylan and Rachel & Ryan delegated as team leaders and a prize of $10,000 at stake – everyone rose to the challenge of making this renovation extra special for the boys.
The Block favourite boys, Oz & Omar oversaw the back patio renovation, realising that the backyard was also in need of a makeover. They didn’t hesitate to extend their challenge area to include not only the back deck, but also the backyard, which goes to show the generosity and impact this challenge had on all Block contestants. With Outdure on The Block 2022 for their fourth consecutive year running as preferred outdoor decking supplier, it was no coincident that the company were called in to help with this exceptional challenge. Outdure’s QwickBuild deck framing system was perfect to achieve the low height deck required, and by using durable ResortDeck composite decking it would mean extremely low maintenance, keeping a freshly oiled look for years with no need for staining, oiling or painting.
The ultimate challenge was to create a seamless indoor outdoor flow, with no step down from the inside to the outside deck, along with building an access ramp. What made QwickBuild perfect for this project is it is a lightweight aluminium frame that can go to the low height of 90mm which was required for this build. Outdure’s Quickbuild easily creates the perfect indoor-outdoor flow and it is ultra-fast to install, making it perfect to use on The Block where time and quality is a must. Rob from RSC Construction Group couldn’t agree more, as his team installed this deck on the busy challenge house site.
“With the challenge of working around so many trades and camera men, along with the added requirement of an access ramp and a deck this low, we just couldn’t have turned it around so quickly if we didn’t use QwickBuild” Rob said. With QwickBuild being able to go as low as needed at 90mm and being a lightweight aluminium frame, it made what would be a more complex deck quite simple and easy to install. “The other benefit of this is that it is aluminium, as the ramp actually went down into the yard, and grassy area, so, being aluminium, you have the confidence it won’t rust, warp or buckle under the moisture as a normal timber frame would.” QwickBuild is the only deck framing system that provides a low height, level and stable solution for supporting decking, tiles or turf. The aluminium joist/bearer profiles suit all deck heights and is ideal for a low-risk floating deck system for installation over concrete as was the case at Tim & Tylers house.
Havana was the chosen ResortDeck composite decking colour because of its natural timber look as well as being extremely durable with minimal maintenance needed so the deck will look great for many years. ResortDeck composite decking is splinter free, termite proof, does not leach or scratch and is fade and mould resistant so is perfect for Australia’s harsh weather conditions. The result of Tim & Tylers outdoor areas was nothing short of spectacular, coupled with functionality and low maintenance, perfect for their outdoor living space.
So, while the contestants on The Block got to deliver award winning kitchens, they didn’t fall short of over delivering a beautifully renovated house that meet the needs of their Gisborne neighbours everyday living.
